Maine is the most heavily forested state in the U.S. with more than 60 major species of trees covering 90 percent of the state. From the pines, spruces, and cedars to the maples, oaks, and aspens, and many more in-between, how many can you identify, and do you know why they grow here? On Thursday July 19 Carey Kish, avid hiker and licensed Maine forester, will present an overview of the ecology of the Maine forest from soils to sunlight to succession; the parts of a tree and how trees function. We’ll review the common softwood and hardwood trees found in the Maine woods and mountains. Then join us for an optional field trip on Saturday, July 21 to Kish’s woodlot to reinforce learning from Thursday evening. The evening program begins at 7pm on Thursday, July 19, at the Freeport Community Library 10 Library Road. Parking is free and plentiful. Join us for a potluck dinner at 6pm; the program at 7pm. Bring a potluck item to share and your own dinnerware (plate, utensils etc.). Drinks will be available. Advanced registration and attendance on Thursday evening required for the Saturday field trip. For more information, please download a flyer (240KB PDF) or email Education Chair John Mullens All events are free and open to the public.
