John Mullens awarded Distinguished Service Award

Having received multiple nominations from volunteers and staff, we are pleased to award AMC’s 2023 Distinguished Service Award to John Mullens.

The impact John has had on the Maine Chapter spans from high level thinking about the Maine Woods Initiative to the essential and practical work of building trails and shelters year after year. The Maine Chapter shared their appreciation for the way John changed the tone and processes of how they do their work. They appreciate his creativity, kindness, and willingness to roll up his sleeves and get things done.

As a Regional Director for the North, John helped navigate the Chapters Committee through the Western Mass name change, the closure of the Mohawk Hudson Chapter, chapter focus on excess reserve, and the essential work of working on AMC’s DEI goals and initiatives. Staff and Regional Directors appreciate John’s dedication to making the Chapters Committee an interactive experience that enriched the work of Chairs and of the broader AMC.

As Chair of this Committee, John served as an essential link and support for staff who work with chapters showing a willingness not only to suggest solutions but put in the time to bring about change. John’s calm, wise advice was most appreciated to help AMC navigate the first two years of the pandemic.

In addition, John’s extensive efforts as a member of the AMC150 committee showed his dedication and commitment to furthering AMC’s mission and ensuring all AMC community stakeholders participate in developing our strategic vision and priorities. With the Board of Directors, he brought urgency to the importance of developing actionable goals for our DEI work and served on the Search Committee for our next CEO.

In all aspects of John’s engagement with AMC, his kindness, principled questions, and willingness to pitch in have set an example to others for effective collaboration and civil discourse. We so appreciate your service and commitment and know that the entire AMC community is better for it. Congratulations.
