We’re thrilled to share some exciting updates and opportunities for trail work in 2024.Please note, this article does not list all trips planned.

National Trails Day (June 1) Trips:

Embark on an adventure of your choice! Join Josh Barlow and Katie Barlow as they lead a trail work expedition supporting the Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust. Alternatively, William Jones and I will be leading an AMC Young Members work party at this land trust, with an overnight stay at the shelter. Additionally, explore Cutler Mountain in Hiram, Maine, with Patsy Leavitt on a trail work trip. Or, opt to join Susan Cottle at one of the Midcoast Conservancy properties in Lincoln County. Pop-Up Trail Work at Pisgah Hill Preserve (April 28):

Our Pop-Up trail work this year will be at the Royal River Conservation Trust, Pisgah Hill Preserve (South) in New Gloucester. Short 2-hour trips will provide newcomers a taste of trail work, and we’re planning a longer all-day trip. Trips are posted here.

Maine AMC Lodges Trails Scholarships and Fellowships:

We’re broadening our scholarship program to incorporate Fellowships for individuals interested in leading trail trips to the Maine Lodges. This year, applications are open for the John Mullens Trail Fellowships, alongside the continuation of the Peter Rodrick Scholarships program for those interested in exploring trail work opportunities. Please help us spread the word among friends who are keen on trail work, whether they’re newcomers or potential leader candidates, at the Maine Lodges. Maine Lodges Trail Work Trips – posting trip dates:

May and June trips will be posted by March 1. Note that the Medawisla October Trip will now be posted June 1 to reduce participant churn.

Welcome Susan Cottle to the Trails Leaders Team!

After volunteering a few years with the AMC naturalist program and many years of trail work for several land trusts, Susan joined the AMC Trails Leaders last year. This year, she is hitting the ground running and will be part of the Little Lyford trip while also leading excursions with the Midcoast Conservancy. Susan is committed to supporting the Midcoast Conservancy, and she has planned a trip for June 1 (National Trails Day) with another one planned for June 29. We’re excited to have Susan on board, bringing her passion and expertise to our Trails Leaders Team!

Become a Trails Leader – April 26:

In light of increasingly extreme weather events, there is a growing demand for trail leaders in various Land Trusts. Take the first step towards becoming a Maine Chapter leader, including trails leader, by participating in our leader training on April 26 at Bryant Pond in Woodstock, ME. To sign up to become a Chapter Leader

Trail Work Training at Trail Skills College – May 16-24:
