Looking to take your furry, 4-legged on your next hike? There are a few things you should know, but the first thing you should find out is if they are even permitted where you are headed; for instance dogs are not allowed in Baxter State Park. In addition, many areas require your furry companion to be leashed. So check with the local management organization for the location of your planned outing. Here are some other trail ethics taken from the Appalachian Trail Conservancy to keep in mind when hiking or backpacking with dogs:
-
– Do not allow your dog to chase wildlife.
– Leash your dog around water sources and in sensitive alpine areas.
– Do not allow your dog to stand in springs or other water sources.
– Bury your dog’s waste as you would your own.
– Always allow your dog rest time and time to rehydrate.
– Be mindful of the rights of other hikers not to be bothered, even by a friendly dog.
