National Trails Day is more than a single day—it’s a celebration of community, stewardship, and our shared love of the outdoors. This year, the AMC Maine Chapter is marking the occasion with multiple opportunities to give back to the trails we love.
Saturday, May 31 – Great Pond Wildlands, East Orland, ME
Kick off the weekend by joining Rota Knott and Scott Guay to help reintroduce the American chestnut to Maine forests. This unique project, held in partnership with the Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust, blends trail stewardship with ecological restoration.
Saturday, June 7 – Montville Woods, Montville, ME
Join trip leader Susan Cottle for a day of trail work in Montville Woods, a beautiful property featuring rich forest and rugged terrain. This is a great opportunity to connect with others and make a tangible impact on the local trail network.
Sunday, June 8 – Cutler Mountain, Hiram, ME
The celebration continues with a second National Trails Day event, led by Patsy Leavitt, at scenic Cutler Mountain. Come for the camaraderie, stay for the views, and help us care for this well-loved trail.
Looking Ahead: Indigenous Peoples Day Trail Work Trips
Our ever-popular Indigenous Peoples Day weekend trips return this fall! Mark your calendars and watch for registration to open on June 1:
- October 10–13 – Medawisla Lodge & Cabins
- October 10–13 – Little Lyford Lodge & Cabins
These fall trips offer a mix of rewarding trail work, shared meals, and crisp autumn air in the heart of the Maine Woods. Spots go fast, so sign up early!
Join the Movement — As a Volunteer or Leader
Do you have a favorite public forest or a land trust you care deeply about? We’re always looking for new trail leaders to help steward trails across Maine. Want something even more involved? I’m currently looking for someone to join me as Trails Co-Chair—an opportunity for anyone passionate about trails and interested in playing a leadership role. You’ll help represent our chapter’s trail leaders on the AMC’s Intra-Chapter Chairs Committee and be part of shaping the future of trail stewardship in Maine.
You can also adopt a trail in AMC’s Maine Woods Initiative (MWI) region and help maintain the incredible trail network in the heart of the North Woods (here).
Ready to pitch in?
Whether you’re new to trail work or a seasoned volunteer, we’d love to have you join us.
