Learn Trail Maintenance in the AMC Maine Woods

Description

The Maine Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is seeking applicants for the Peter Roderick Trail Scholarship. This opportunity is designed for individuals with little or no prior trail work experience who are eager to learn. If you’ve been curious about trail stewardship and want a supportive introduction, this scholarship is an excellent first step.

About the Peter Roderick Trail Scholarship

The scholarship honors Peter Roderick, a long-time AMC volunteer whose dedication to trail maintenance in the Maine Woods has inspired many others to get involved. Known for his willingness to mentor and share practical skills, Peter embodies the spirit of stewardship and community that this scholarship aims to foster. The program encourages new volunteers to build confidence, learn hands-on trail skills, and become active caretakers of the outdoors.

2026 Trail Maintenance Trip Dates

  • June 19 – June 22 — Little Lyford Lodge & Gorman Chairback Lodge

  • June 26 – June 29 — Medawisla Lodge

  • September 11 – September 14 — Medawisla Lodge

  • October 9 – October 12 — Little Lyford Lodge, staying at Gorman Chairback Lodge

 

Important Details

Trail work trips begin with supper on Friday evening and conclude after lunch on Monday.

Selected scholarship recipients receive:

  • Three nights of co-ed bunkhouse lodging

  • All meals

  • Necessary trail tools and equipment

  • No participation cost

 

This is a unique opportunity to experience the Maine Woods while contributing to the AMC’s trail stewardship mission.
