Sunday available for exploring the notch. Meals prepared by the group. Great food. Individuals responsible for own lunches and snacks. Winter gear required. Space limited. Trip fills up fast. Sun, Feb 7 - Family Winterfest at AMC Cold River Camp. Join us for a day of family oriented winter activities, using the AMC Cold River Camp near Evan's Notch as a base. Snowshoe and cross-country ski tours are planned for the morning along with a beginner's clinic on winter hiking/snowshoeing. Winter games and activities are planned for the afternoon. We will gear the activities to the group and adjust for weather as needed, so will plan on holding this event snow or sun! We will use the 'Convent' as a warming hut with warm drinks and refreshments available. Leaders and co-leaders include; Jim and Mary Folsom, Dale Temm, Peter Heinold and Paul Lones. Fri-Sun, Feb 26-28 - Rangeley. A weekend of frolicking in the snow at the Saddleback Lake Lodge complex. We'll be near by Saddleback Mountain for downhill skiing, and several groomed cross country trails. And there's lots of room to make our own cross country and snowshoe trails. We have accommodations for 12 in cabins with heat, hot water, several bedrooms, and fully equipped kitchens. Lodging for 2 nights is $35. Bring your own sleeping bag, towel, and beverages. Sat, Feb 27 - Snowshoe up to the top of a seldom visited peak in Evans Notch. From the top of (Little) Sugarloaf Mt. off the Bickford Brook trail you can get gorgeous views down the Cold River Valley. This is an easy trip with about 1/2 mile of bushwhacking before we hit the summit. - just under 3 mi. total. Leisurely trip. Leaders are Jim & Mary Folsom

Sat, Mar 4 - L Debbie Andrews proposes a full moon walk on OOB beach starting from the Pine Point parking lot of the Clam Bake at 6PM. No need to register although it would be appreciated. This is two days after the real full moon, but conflicts won't allow much else. Debbie promises good views of the moon. Pat's Pizza in Scarborough might make a good a pre walk meeting place.
Fri-Sun, Mar 5-7 - Friday night to Sunday - Wonalancet Cabin. Well hike Whiteface on Saturday and Sandwich on Sunday at a steady, moderate pace. Wed, May 5 - Just in Case Workshop. Windahm Public Library from 7 to 9 PM. This interactive workshop will be facilitated by Jim Folsom, and will include demos of several recommended emergency items. Handouts will be included. We encourage people to bring their own emergency pack, and share their ideas and experience. Our goal is to derive a small emergency pack of items that weigh 1 lb. or less, are compact, easy to use, and have a long shelf life. This pack is used only for an emergency situation where you must stay outdoors for an extra day or two in tough conditions. This does not replace a first aid kit or normal trail snacks. We will publish the results in Wilderness Matters to share with all the members. Please come and help us create this new resource - Just In Case you need it. L Jim Folsom

Sat, May 15 - Family Hike. Scarboro Marsh; Family Guided Nature Walk Join Jim Thorne for a guided nature walk at Scarboro Marsh. Jim, a long time Maine Chapter member and Regional Director on the AMC board, is also a volunteer guide for the Maine Audubon Society with years of experience working with children of all ages, as well as adults. The walk will begin in the afternoon with a short talk about the Scarboro Marsh and what participants might expect to see on the walk, followed by a 2 hour or so walk in and along the marsh. Bring a snack for the end of the walk when we'll share what we saw and learned. Though geared for families with children, everyone is welcome. The pace of the walk will be geared to the group, with frequent stops to observe plants and wildlife. Bring your binoculars if you have them. Rubber or waterproof boots are suggested. Sat-Sun, May 15-16 - Maine Chapter Wilderness First Aid Workshop. The sessions will be conducted by SOLO at the Scarborough Fire Station. Cost to AMC members is $55; non-members cost is $70. (This would be a good time to look into AMC membership!) The cost includes lunch and snacks. Participants must provide their own other meals and overnight accommodations. Information on campgrounds and other accommodations near the workshop will be provided with registration materials. Persons wishing to participate should notify the Workshop Committee as soon as possible since registration will be limited to 30.

Sun, June 13 - Hike. Family Hike to Blueberry Mt. in Evan's Notch area. This hike is 4.5 miles long with an elevation gain of 1,200 feet and is appropriate for families with children 6 and older with previous hiking experience. Highlights include a small flume and pool in Rattlesnake Brook and great vistas from the open ledges near the summit. Hiking time will be 3-4 hours, so with time to explore the flume and pool and lunch at the top, total time will be 5-6 hours, depending on the pace of the group. Afterwards we may stop for ice cream at Stowe Corner Store, for those so inclined! The trailhead is approximately an hour and a half drive from the Portland area. L Paul Lones

Sat-Sun, Aug 21-22 - Family Overnight. Join us for a family oriented overnight at Lonesome Lake Hut. Nature walks, swimming and other activities are available. The hike in is 1.6 miles, with an elevation gain of approximately 900 feet. We will move at a pace geared to the group. Sleeping accommodations are in 4 and 6 person bunk rooms. The cost for AMC members is $44 for adults and $29 for children under 15 (add $7 and $3 for non-member adults and children respectively). Reservation deadline is July 11 and requires payment in full. Fri-Mon, Sep 10-13 Trail Magic Event - Members of AMC Maine Chapter and Maine Appalachian Trail Club are joining forces again this year to be trail angels on the AT. Last year 28 hungry AT section and thru hikers were fed and also resupplied with misc. items needed for the trail. We collected their trash, repaired gear, resupplied misc. items and gave them a welcomed meal before returning to the trail. Many hikers had interesting stories to share and tips for the trail. We received many postcards of gratitude and also some great photos of hikers finishing the AT on Baxter Peak. Trail Magic '98 was a huge success, '99 promises to be the same.Sat, Sept 11 - Hike.
