A reminder to join us for a land navigation workshop at the South Portland Library on Tuesday, April 20, 2010. This workshop offers an introduction to the fundamentals of map reading, identification of symbols, contour lines, terrain features, compass use, and triangulation. Once learned, these skills will enable participants to feel more confident with backcountry travel. The workshop is an indoor event at the South Portland Library at 482 Highland in South Portland on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 starting at 6:30 pm.

The indoor workshop is followed by an outdoor practical providing a refresher of fundamentals of map reading, compass use, triangulation, and identification of terrain features. Then, participants will put their newfound skills to the test with a half-day guided bushwhack. You’ll go home with much more confidence in your ability to use a map and compass when it really counts! The outdoor practical will be on Saturday, April 24, 2010.

Participants are encouraged to attend both sessions; folks with some previous land navigation skills are welcome to attend either workshop. There is a $10 fee to attend one or both sessions and this includes map instruction materials. Contact Peter Broderick at 207-778-0801 or [email protected] to participate.
