Interested in birds and like to hike? Or, would you like to learn more about bird identification to support a conservation effort? Mountain Birdwatch might have just what you are looking for. This long-term monitoring program was started in 2000 to monitor high-elevation forest birds in the northeast such as Bicknell’s Thrush. They’re looking for beginner to experienced birdwatchers who are strong hikers to conduct a single survey in June; routes are available in Maine as well as in the Adirondacks, Catskills, Green and White Mountains. The program is a citizen science initiative and they offer training for those interesting in volunteering. Hike a scenic mountain trail, enjoy the sunrise, and count birds for conservation!
